The origins of the Parma Botanical Garden date back to the 1600s. In fact, before the present Garden, there was a Giardino dei Semplici in Parma founded by Ranuccio I Farnese.
The present Botanical Garden was established in 1770 at the behest of Abbot Giambattista Guatteri, professor of the chair of Botany, under the auspices of Ferdinand I of Bourbon.
The Botanical Garden is located in the historic center of the city, covering 11,000 square meters.
The central part near the greenhouses has the appearance of an Italian garden, as in the 18th-century design.
The Arboretum, was created between the 18th and 19th centuries.
The famous “Violetta di Parma” favored by Duchess Maria Luigia is also grown there.
