The Church of San Michele Arcangelo is located in the hamlet of Mattaleto, in the municipality of Langhirano, in the province of Parma. It is a building of great historical and architectural value, which over the centuries has maintained its importance as a place of worship and aggregation for the local community.
History and Architecture
The first documented evidence of the church dates back to 1230, although its origin may be even older, probably from the Longobard period. Initially built in Romanesque style, the building underwent profound transformations over the centuries.
In 1715, due to the precarious condition of the original structure, it was decided to demolish the church, leaving only the bell tower standing. The reconstruction took place according to the plans of architect Francesco Boetti, who rebuilt it in Baroque style. The work was completed in 1723, giving the church its current appearance.
The façade features an elegant combination of stone in the lower part and brickwork in the upper part, with decorative pilasters and niches enriching the aesthetics. The bell tower, a remnant of the original building, is a distinctive element and a link to the site's medieval past.
The Interior and Works of Art
The interior of the church has a single nave and preserves interesting 19th-century decorations. Among the most noteworthy elements are:
The high altar: a work of great elegance, made of precious materials and enriched with inlays and gilded details.
Eighteenth-century paintings depicting sacred scenes and the figure of Saint Michael the Archangel.
The 19th-century organ, a historical instrument that is still used today during religious celebrations.
Sacred statues and furnishings, witnesses to the church's artistic and spiritual tradition.
