Golaso Castle is a historic fortification located in the hamlet of Golaso, in the municipality of Varsi, in the province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna. The castle stands in a strategic position along the provincial road that connects Varsi to Bardi, immersed in the beauty of the Ceno Valley, a natural area that adds charm to the structure.
History
The origins of Golaso Castle are shrouded in mystery, with traces dating back to the 6th or 7th century. However, some historical documents suggest that the fortification may have been built around the 13th century. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several transformations, going from a simple medieval fortification to a fortified house in the 16th-17th centuries, when it also became the site of an agricultural estate.
In the 18th century, the castle became the property of the Rugarli family, who maintained control of it until the end of feudal rights in 1805. Subsequently, the property was acquired by the Corsini family, who still own it today.
Architecture
Golaso Castle extends over an area of approximately 5,000 m² and is structured around two main courtyards. The façade is dominated by three towers that give the fortification its imposing appearance:
Two cylindrical corner towers at the base and polygonal at the top, equipped with small slits.
A central, square tower that overlooks the entrance portal.
On the south side of the castle there is a long entrance wing and other structures, including stables and a chapel. The manor house, located on the north side, is an elegant building with a gallery overlooking the internal courtyard. A unique feature of the castle is the presence of 12 staircases, 30 doors and portals and 365 windows, symbolizing the months, days and days of the solar year.
