Felino Castle: history, architecture and visits
Felino Castle is one of the most fascinating landmarks in the province of Parma, standing in a dominant position over the Val Baganza. This impressive medieval fortress is one of the top places to visit in Felino, thanks to its thousand-year history and its excellent state of preservation.
History of Felino Castle
The earliest records of the castle date back to the 9th century, when it was built as a defensive structure against barbarian invasions.
In the 12th century, it came under the control of the Baratti family, and in the following centuries it was contested by important noble families such as the Pallavicino, Visconti and Sforza.
In the 15th century, it became the property of the powerful Rossi family, who transformed the castle into an elegant fortified residence while preserving its defensive character.
During the 17th century, under the rule of the Farnese family, the castle gradually lost its military function and was adapted into a noble residence.
After periods of neglect and later restoration work, the castle is now a prestigious venue for events and weddings and one of the main historical attractions in the area.
The Salame di Felino Museum, once housed inside the castle, has been moved to a new location in the town center, where it continues to celebrate one of the most famous local products of the Parma area.
Castle architecture
Felino Castle is a perfect example of medieval architecture with Renaissance influences.
- Quadrangular layout with four corner towers
- Massive defensive walls with a moat and drawbridge
- Inner courtyard with elegant arcades
- Frescoed halls, once home to the nobility
Its strategic position and imposing defensive structures made it a key stronghold for centuries in controlling the Val Baganza.
