A jewel of architecture and history
Located in the historic center of Parma, the Church of San Francesco del Prato is one of the most important religious buildings in the city. Founded in the 13th century by Franciscan friars, it is considered one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in Emilia-Romagna.
After the suppression of religious orders in the Napoleonic era, it was used as a prison for over 150 years. The recent restoration, completed in 2021, has returned to the city a place of great charm and spirituality.
What to see
The church is striking for the width of the nave, the pointed arches and the large rose window on the façade. Inside there are carefully restored 16th-century frescoes and the Oratory of the Immaculate, decorated by artists such as Anselmi and Rondani.
San Francesco del Prato is now open for masses, cultural events, concerts and guided tours.
