Discovering the Boschi di Carrega: a natural oasis a stone's throw from Parma
The Regional Park of the Carrega Woods extends between the municipalities of Collecchio and Sala Baganza, in the province of Parma, and is a true naturalistic jewel of Emilia-Romagna. Established in 1982, the park covers an area of approximately 1,270 hectares, which expands to 2,800 hectares considering the adjoining areas. Once a hunting reserve of the Farnese family and then of the Bourbons, today it is an ideal protected area for excursions, walks and birdwatching.
A landscape of woods and ponds
The park is characterised by a great variety of environments, with mixed forests of oak, chestnut, beech and coniferous trees. Among the most representative tree species are the cedar of Lebanon, the American silver fir and the redwood. There is no lack of clearings and stable meadows that provide shelter for many animal species. There are also small artificial lakes, created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for irrigation and landscaping purposes.
Flora and fauna
Biodiversity is one of the park's strengths. Roe deer, foxes, badgers, hares and numerous bird species such as the great spotted woodpecker, the long-eared owl and the buzzard can be observed here. The flora is also very rich, with rare and centuries-old specimens that make every walk a unique experience.
The park offers a network of well-marked trails suitable for all levels of hikers. Among the best known trails are:
Sentiero delle Ginestre (Broom Trail): easy and scenic, also suitable for children.
Laghetti Trail: ideal for those who want to explore the park's wetlands.
Casino dei Boschi Trail: a route that passes by the historic ducal residence, now open to visitors.
