The Via Francigena passes through Fidenza and is an important part of the town's history and identity. For centuries, pilgrims, merchants and travellers crossed this area along the ancient route connecting northern Europe with Rome.
The connection with the pilgrimage route is still clearly visible in Fidenza's historic centre. The magnificent Cathedral of San Donnino is the main symbol of this heritage. Its Romanesque façade, decorated with sculptures associated with Benedetto Antelami and his workshop, includes fascinating images linked to medieval journeys, pilgrims and religious traditions.
Fidenza also appears on the historic itinerary recorded by Sigeric, Archbishop of Canterbury, who documented the stages of his journey from Rome back to England at the end of the 10th century. At that time, the town was known as Borgo San Donnino and was already an important stopping point for travellers.
Today, Fidenza remains an important stage for people exploring the Via Francigena on foot or by bicycle. Travellers arriving from the direction of Fiorenzuola d'Arda pass through the town before continuing towards the hills and the northern slopes of the Apennines.
One of the most interesting sections is the Fidenza–Fornovo di Taro route, approximately 34 kilometres long. After leaving the town centre, the trail gradually enters the countryside and the foothills of the Parma Apennines, passing through rural landscapes, small villages and historic places.
Fidenza also provides useful services for modern pilgrims. At the local Tourist Information Office (IAT-R), travellers can find maps and information, obtain the Pilgrim's Credential and receive the official stamp confirming their passage through Fidenza.
The town also offers accommodation specifically connected with the pilgrimage tradition, including the San Donnino Pilgrim Hostel.
Walking the Via Francigena through Fidenza is a way to experience history, spirituality, art, nature and slow travel, following an ancient European route that continues to connect people, towns and landscapes today.
