The Convent of San Francesco in Pellegrino Parmense: History and Useful Information
The Convent of San Francesco in Pellegrino Parmense is one of the most fascinating and historically significant places in the Parma area. Located in the heart of the village, this ancient building tells centuries of history, spirituality and changes.
History of the Convent
Tradition has it that the convent was founded in 1421 by San Bernardino da Siena, a prominent figure of the Franciscan order. The building was used for a long time by the friars, who enriched it with an oratory dedicated to San Rocco, built in 1512.
In 1805, following the Napoleonic decrees that ordered the suppression of religious orders, the convent was confiscated and used for various purposes over time. It became a hospital, then a school and was finally abandoned. However, thanks to the interest of the Municipality of Pellegrino Parmense, in 1999 the building was renovated and transformed into a hostel and cultural center.
During the restoration works, valuable architectural elements emerged, including frescoes that decorated the ancient church and parts of the original structures. Today the convent represents an important testimony of the past, hosting events and welcoming visitors interested in its history. Today the convent houses a hostel.
