Emigrant Museum – Tarsogno, Tornolo

Located in the mountain village of Tarsogno, in the municipality of Tornolo, the Emigrant Museum (Museo dell'Emigrante) is a fascinating cultural destination dedicated to the history of emigration from the Upper Taro Valley and the Parma Apennines.

The museum preserves the memories of generations of local people who left their homes in search of work and better living conditions, travelling to Europe, North America and South America.

History and Cultural Heritage

Inaugurated in July 2004, the museum is housed in the Tarsogno Youth Centre and is dedicated to Anna Maria Figoni, a local teacher who worked to preserve the village's historical memory.

The exhibition includes approximately 300 historical photographs, personal belongings, traditional clothing, old suitcases, musical instruments and objects carried by emigrants during their journeys.

Among the most interesting exhibits are the belongings of travelling merchants, who once earned their living by selling small goods in distant towns and countries.

The museum also recalls the experiences of families who settled abroad while maintaining strong emotional and cultural connections with their homeland.

Outside, the Emigrant Monument, created by local artist Ido Armani, symbolises the courage, sacrifices and hopes of those who left Tarsogno.

The museum offers visitors an opportunity to discover an important chapter of Italian social history and the enduring relationship between the Parma Apennines and emigrant communities around the world.
